ISO 21423:2026 standard enables mobile robot interoperability

The Robot Report: New ISO interoperability standard covers collaboration among mobile robots from multiple vendors

The new ISO 21423:2026 standard is intended to facilitate communications among different mobile robots. Source: mansyupasara AI, Adobe Stock As fleets of mobile robots grow, the need for interoperability among systems increases. The Association for Advancing Automation, or A3, yesterday published ISO 21423:2026, a new international standard for communications among industrial mobile robots, or IMRs, regardless of vendor or model. “Companies want to choose the robots that fit their applications a

Get smart on it

A new international standard called ISO 21423:2026 establishes a common communications protocol that allows industrial mobile robots from different manufacturers to work together in the same facility. The standard specifies how robots, fleet managers, and other equipment exchange information about location, speed, direction, condition, tasking, and availability. This interoperability reduces robots interfering with each other's paths and improves system efficiency, while also enabling communication with machines, enterprise planning tools, and building systems like automated doors and lifts. The standard was published by the Association for Advancing Automation and addresses a need that industrial users of mobile robots have requested for years.
