Silicon Valley wants you to invest in miracles

Investing in any stock is kind of like gambling in the sense that you're betting your money on a company's future performance. But how do you bet on a technology that could, in the worst-case scenario, "pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity," or best case, "bring forth an age of miracles"? To some extent, Anthropic suggests in a letter at the top of its S-1 filing, you have to just believe. Anthropic's 335-page S-1 prospectus, filed Monday, is part of a steady hype

Get smart on it

An AI company filed paperwork to go public, presenting itself to potential investors with unusually detailed disclosures about both the transformative promise and catastrophic risks of advanced AI technology. The filing runs 335 pages with 94 pages devoted to risk factors, including warnings that AI models could pose existential risks to humanity if not developed safely. The company is structuring itself as a public benefit corporation, meaning it must prioritize its social mission alongside shareholder interests, and argues that because powerful AI development appears inevitable, it should lead this effort despite enormous financial costs and uncertainties. This filing represents a broader trend in Silicon Valley of companies making expansive promises to Wall Street while using information overload as a strategy to attract long-term believers in their vision rather than quick financial gains.

Anthropic is asking Wall Street to believe in AGI

Today on Decoder, I’m joined by Joey Brookhart, an analyst at the chip and AI research firm SemiAnalysis, to help me dig into the story inside the numbers of the Anthropic IPO filing — a document known as an S-1. Anthropic just filed its S-1 to go public on the Nasdaq, and it could start trading as soon as next month at a valuation of anywhere between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion. That would immediately make it one of the most valuable companies on the planet. But the price
