OpenAI strengthens violence prevention in ChatGPT

OpenAI: Community safety report and new protections for teens

OpenAI is strengthening violence prevention in ChatGPT with expanded safeguards, earlier interventions, and a new commitment to public safety reporting.

Get smart on it

OpenAI announced new safety measures for its widely used AI product, including a commitment to publish regular reports on how it detects and responds to violence-related harms. The company made over 200 law enforcement referrals in the third quarter and is strengthening its systems to restrict detailed information about past mass attacks and weapons, with additional protections for users under 18. These safeguards will automatically respond more carefully when conversations show warning signs of violence, and can pause accounts that repeatedly discuss harming others. The first Community Safety Report will be published in early 2027, with updates every six months thereafter, as OpenAI works alongside law enforcement, mental health professionals, and other experts to prevent real-world violence.

Today on Decoder, I’m joined by Joey Brookhart, an analyst at the chip and AI research firm SemiAnalysis, to help me dig into the story inside the numbers of the Anthropic IPO filing — a document known as an S-1. The US has charged five individuals as part of the first broad federal crackdown on “ghost students”—fraudsters who steal the identities of hundreds of Americans to pose as fake college students and steal student loans. In a press release Thursday, the Department of Justice said it had uncovered a large-scale scheme relying partly on AI. The DOJ seized more than $750,000 in cryptocurrency from “a network associated with Kenyan nationals" after data analysis helped flag likely fraudsters. Assista
