Mistral releases open-weight Mistral Large 4 AI model

Hugging Face: Welcome Le Chonk: Mistral Large 4 on Hugging Face

Mistral's latest offering aims to compete with frontier models while remaining accessible to researchers and developers on open platforms.

What happened

Mistral AI released open weights for Mistral Large 4, a multimodal AI model with 1 trillion total parameters and 52 billion active parameters that accepts text and images as input and generates text output. The model, nicknamed Le Chonk, was initially released in preview three weeks ago and is now available under an MIT-derivative license. The open-weight release allows users to deploy the model on their own hardware and control deployment policies rather than relying on API providers.

What each outlet adds
  • Hugging Face ↗: The model demonstrates particular strength in cybersecurity tasks, achieving 82% on vulnerability reproduction and patching tests where several closed frontier models score near zero.
  • SiliconANGLE ↗: Mistral developed the model using its own European data centers rather than relying on outside infrastructure, and it performs competitively with Chinese-built coding models while using fewer tokens per task.
Why it matters

Open availability allows security teams to build custom systems around their own codebases and malware samples, enables researchers to measure the model's safety behaviors directly, and reduces risks of losing access during security incidents. Mistral frames this release as democratizing access to state-of-the-art AI capabilities that would otherwise be concentrated among a few well-funded actors.

Get smart on it

Mistral Large 4 is a multimodal AI model that accepts text and images as input and generates text output, built using a Mixture-of-Experts architecture with approximately 1 trillion total parameters. The model is released as open-weight software under an MIT-derivative license, giving users control over deployment and usage policies rather than relying on API providers. It demonstrates particular strength in cybersecurity tasks, achieving 82% on vulnerability reproduction and patching tests where several closed frontier models score near zero, and also performs well on coding and multimodal understanding benchmarks. The open availability is significant because it allows security teams to build custom systems around their own codebases and malware samples, enables researchers to measure the model's safety behaviors directly, and reduces risks of losing access during security incidents when depending on external APIs.

Google’s next Genie AI model generates more realistic experiences

Google announced today its Genie 4 world model for generating interactive experiences using AI. The company says the model has four main updates: It allows for more realistic worlds, lets users update an experience in real time with a natural language prompt, can generate audio, and uses Gemini 3.8 Flash under the hood to help with its simulations. It also can create experiences that are about two minutes long, up from one minute for the previous Genie 3 model. Google is pitchi
