Apple's move to release open-source AI models could shift how developers build voice and decision-making features without relying on proprietary cloud services.
Two open-source software packages have been announced for Apple platforms that provide alternatives to Apple's built-in models for speech recognition and decision-making tasks. AnySpeechRecognizer lets developers choose from multiple speech-to-text engines, including options from NVIDIA and Alibaba, and adds speaker diarization to identify who is speaking. AnyDecisionModel answers yes-or-no, multiple-choice, and rating-scale questions by deriving answers from a model's probabilities rather than generating text. Both packages can download open models from the Hugging Face Hub and run them directly on users' devices, which can be faster and less expensive than using language models for these specialized tasks.
