Enterprise artificial intelligence is entering a phase where cost considerations are reshaping business decisions about where AI models run and which models to use. Inference spending is climbing faster than training spending, prompting companies to move AI work to the edge of their networks and toward open-source models instead of frontier models because of cost savings. Companies are also weighing strategic control questions, deciding whether to run AI on infrastructure they control or outsource their data to cloud providers. Memory supply constraints are adding pressure, with demand expected to vastly outpace available supply next year, forcing businesses to make earlier purchasing decisions based on future cost projections.
