Google brings conversational Gemini to Apple CarPlay

The Verge: Conversational Gemini navigation comes to Apple CarPlay

After introducing its Gemini AI assistant to Android Auto last year, Google is now bringing it to Apple CarPlay users. The conversational Gemini in navigation is available today for US drivers, with "rollout happening globally too," according to Google (we've asked for specific regional availability details). It's taken almost 12 months for Google to bring this to CarPlay users, but now they can talk to the voice assistant in Google Maps to get some hands-free help while drivin

Get smart on it

Google's conversational Gemini AI assistant is now available to Apple CarPlay users in the US, allowing drivers to interact with Google Maps through voice commands while keeping their hands on the wheel. The feature enables multi-step questions such as asking for place recommendations and then requesting directions while avoiding toll roads. This brings CarPlay users to feature parity with Android Auto users, who received conversational Gemini navigation approximately 12 months earlier. The update focuses on traffic reporting and finding information about stops and places, though it remains unclear whether CarPlay users will receive additional personalization features that were announced for Android Auto users, which would allow the assistant to access information from Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, and Search.

Gemini's Personal Intelligence is coming to cars

Google kicked off 2026 with the addition of Personal Intelligence to Gemini, allowing its AI to pull in more of your data to formulate answers. It started as a paid feature but eventually came to all Gemini users. However, this feature wasn't available in the car until now. Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and Google Built-in, and it is still, thankfully, an optional feature. As Google points out, a generative AI's outputs are better "when it knows the world and knows
