Disney hires most of Character.AI staff after startup bankruptcy

TechCrunch: Disney agrees to hire the majority of Character.AI’s workforce

After chatbot startup Character.AI filed for bankruptcy earlier this week, many of its employees will have the opportunity to take jobs at Disney. Character.AI’s former CEO Karandeep Anand recently became the entertainment giant’s first CTO, and the startup previously said that Disney had agreed to acquire some of its assets for $20 million. A legal […]

What happened

Chatbot startup Character.AI filed for bankruptcy this week, and Disney agreed to hire the majority of its workforce with employment offers extended to at least 60 employees at an estimated $60 million in annual compensation. Disney is also acquiring some of the startup's assets for $20 million, and Character.AI's former CEO Karandeep Anand became Disney's first CTO. The startup had faced multiple lawsuits claiming its chatbots encouraged minors to self-harm and kill their parents, as well as regulatory investigations worldwide.

What each outlet adds
  • TechCrunch ↗: The startup struggled with high costs and faced litigation-related liabilities and regulatory concerns.
  • Wired AI ↗: Disney apparently sought to have the startup declare bankruptcy as a means to resolve pending lawsuits related to allegations that chatbots encouraged minors to harm themselves and their parents.
  • Ars Technica ↗: The deal is structured as a reverse acquihire that lets Disney obtain employees and technology while leaving Character.AI responsible for ongoing legal claims, a practice that has become more common in the AI industry and drawn criticism from Congress.
Why it matters

This arrangement allows Disney to acquire valuable technology and talent while avoiding inheriting the startup's legal liabilities. The deal highlights how bankruptcy proceedings can be used to separate assets and staff from legal obligations in ways that existing corporate law safeguards were not designed to prevent.

Anthropic has nearly stopped hiring junior staff because AI agents now work six times as many hours

Anthropic is hiring fewer and fewer junior staff in technical roles. The share of junior positions among new hires dropped from 27 to 9 percent since early 2025. By August 2026, AI agents across the company were already logging six times as many hours as humans. Researchers warn of a "tragedy of the cognitive commons": if junior positions disappear, experienced specialists will be in short supply down the road. That is, assuming such specialists are even needed anymore. The article Anth
