Three former SpaceX engineers have switched their attention from making rocket engines to manufacturing steel parts by using AI-driven software and robots. Their immediate goal involves establishing a prototype factory that can automate most of the steel fabrication process for crucial infrastructure components by 2027. The startup, called 1872, officially launched on July 22 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its Factory One facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company is initially focused on autom
Will the 1872 robotic steel factory complete its prototype facility by end of 2027?

Former SpaceX engineers have launched a startup to automate steel manufacturing using AI-driven software and robotic systems. The company aims to produce steel frames for infrastructure like data centers and nuclear reactors by automating a process that currently requires skilled welders. This automation effort addresses a critical labor shortage, as the welding industry is projected to need hundreds of thousands of new workers while facing immigration restrictions and an aging workforce. The startup plans to use AI systems called "Architect" and "Conductor" to manage design, manufacturing planning, and factory floor operations with minimal human intervention.

Surgeons at El Camino Health Heart and Vascular Institute prepare for surgery. | Source: El Camino Health Heart and Vascular Institute Coronary artery bypass grafting, or CABG, is the most common type of cardiac surgery in the world. Despite this, and the heavily invasive nature of the surgery, only 1% of these procedures are performed with the help of robots. At the El Camino Health Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI), surgeons are now performing CABG with Intuitive Surgical‘s da Vinci rob
