X has launched a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that allows AI assistants to connect directly to the platform using a user's account permissions. MCP is an open standard that lets AI models communicate with external tools and services, and previously developers had to build and host their own servers to enable this connection. This move eliminates integration work for developers and allows X to position itself as a real-time information network for AI applications to analyze. X clarified that the MCP tool cannot access its Write API endpoints, preventing autonomous posting on the platform, and the company's existing API rules and pricing structure continue to restrict spam and misuse.
