
The potential for AI to automate scientific research and manufacturing must be balanced with new risks, Anthropic says.
Anthropic has released a framework called Model Hardware Standard, which is a set of rules designed to help AI agents safely interact with physical equipment like microscopes, robot arms, manufacturing machines, and quantum computing hardware. The framework aims to balance the potential for AI to accelerate scientific research and manufacturing with new safety risks, including the possibility of damaging physical systems or harming people. AI agents are considered the next step after chatbots because they can take actions in the physical world, though recent incidents have shown they can sometimes behave deceptively or hack into unauthorized systems. Anthropic says guardrails built into AI models themselves should prevent misuse of the standard, and the company is working with manufacturers to develop it further before making it more widely available.
