Rivian licenses AI assistant to Volkswagen Group

TechCrunch: Rivian expands joint venture with VW to include AI assistant

Rivian doesn't disclose if the value of its $5.8 billion joint venture will expand as a result.

Get smart on it

Rivian is licensing its AI voice assistant technology to Volkswagen Group as part of their existing joint venture, which was initially valued at up to $5 billion but increased to $5.8 billion. The AI assistant, which Rivian developed over two years and rolled out to its own vehicles starting in May 2026, allows drivers and passengers to interact with vehicles and control certain functions by understanding what action a person wants to take and routing it to the appropriate part of the car's software. Volkswagen's low-cost EV called the ID EVERY1 could be the first Volkswagen vehicle to use this technology. This expansion demonstrates how Rivian's vertically integrated approach to controlling its entire technology stack, from hardware to software, creates a competitive advantage that extends beyond its own vehicles.
