Perplexity released a system that splits AI tasks between cloud-based advanced models and a compact model running locally on a Mac. The system addresses a structural problem: sensitive information like deal documents and client records cannot safely be sent to cloud servers. A privacy gate powered by an on-device classifier inspects data before it leaves the device and decides whether to keep it local, mask sensitive information, refuse the action, or ask for user consent. The classifier, called PII-Tracer, detects nine types of personally identifiable information across long conversations and outperforms other detectors at finding every recurring mention of sensitive data.
