A randomized controlled trial tested whether guided learning through an AI system could improve math outcomes for junior secondary students in Sierra Leone. Over eight weeks, students using the tool showed math score gains equivalent to roughly 1.2 to 1.7 years of typical learning progress compared to a control group, with higher gains when teachers incorporated it into about half their lessons. The AI was designed to support deeper understanding through scaffolding questions rather than providing direct answers, with analysis showing students used it to build conceptual understanding in 91.4% of conversations. Teachers remained central to the approach by designing lessons and facilitating discussions, and many reported discovering new teaching methods through their own use of the tool.
