Instagram is implementing new policies to address AI accounts that impersonate real humans. The platform will rename its "AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile" and will search for accounts that fail to self-label as AI-generated, limiting their reach by preventing their posts from being recommended to non-followers in Reels and Explore. This matters because people have expressed frustration at discovering a profile appears human only to learn the person featured is artificially generated. Accounts using AI tools to generate content will not be required to add the label, so the policy targets specifically those profiles representing AI-generated people that are not properly disclosed.
