Google is giving publishers a new button that lets readers make them a preferred source across Search, Discover, and Google News, potentially boosting their traffic as AI search sends fewer clicks to the web.
Will Google expand the publisher follow button to Google News by November 2026?
Resolves by Nov 30, 2026
Google has introduced a "Preferred Sources" button that publishers can add to their websites, allowing readers to mark sites as favorite sources they want to see more often in Google Search, Discover, and Google News. The tool addresses concerns about AI-powered search features reducing traffic to publisher websites, as studies show people are twice as likely to click through to preferred sources when they are available. Readers can also customize their Google Discover feed and audio briefings using natural language commands to specify what topics they want to see more or less of.
