Google's AI assistant Gemini has reached over 950 million monthly users, approaching the billion-user threshold during its Q2 2026 earnings call. This matters because it positions Gemini to compete more directly with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June, and represents a significant shift in the AI assistant market where Gemini's share has risen to 27.7 percent while ChatGPT's market share fell below 50 percent for the first time. Gemini's user base has tripled from the previous year, driven by new features including Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, with particularly strong adoption on iOS where the app has been downloaded over 137 million times in the last 12 months.
