Google’s AI search is rapidly becoming the default, new data shows

AI-generated search answers have grown significantly in prominence on Google's platform, rising from appearing in 15% of searches to 43% within a year. This matters because it represents a fundamental shift in how Google operates, transforming from a tool that directs users to other websites into a destination itself where Google provides the answers directly. The change affects both users, who now spend longer on Google's platform in conversational searches, and publishers, who lose referral traffic when AI summaries answer questions without leading users to click through to their sites. While citations in AI responses have increased more than fivefold over the past year, some publishers have begun implementing tools to block AI crawlers from accessing their content unless compensated.
