
A new study estimates only 2,000 U.S. engineers have the expertise to deliver meaningful AI ROI, as enterprises race to hire forward-deployed engineers to implement AI at scale.
Forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) are specialists who work within client organizations to build, implement, and deploy software or AI models. An executive search firm estimates there are only about 2,000 engineers in the U.S. with the necessary sector expertise and applied AI experience to help enterprises achieve meaningful returns on their AI investments, while demand for these specialists is projected to surge by 2,100% by year end. The shortage matters because enterprises are shifting from accessing AI models to figuring out how to implement them into workflows that improve their bottom line, and companies are increasingly hiring internal FDE teams rather than relying on external firms, seeking to protect proprietary business processes from AI companies that might compete with them. However, one expert cautioned that the FDE role may not remain in demand long-term if AI becomes sufficiently automated or if physical AI implementation eventually replaces enterprise AI as the focus area.
