Elon Musk spends half his time talking robots and AI on Tesla earnings calls
An analysis of the last seven years of Tesla earnings calls shows just little attention Musk pays to Tesla's car business.

Elon Musk now spends approximately half of his remarks on Tesla's quarterly earnings calls discussing artificial intelligence, robotaxis, and Full Self-Driving software, up from 15% to 20% in prior years like 2022. Separately, his discussion of the Optimus humanoid robot project has increased sharply, occupying at least 10% of his recent remarks and nearly a third of his focus on one recent quarterly call. This shift in Musk's attention reflects his effort to position Tesla as an AI and robotics company rather than primarily as a carmaker, even as the company shipped nearly half a million cars last quarter and made 70% of its money from car sales. Other Tesla executives have been slower to follow this focus shift away from the automotive business, which stopped growing as the company faced increased competition.
