Anthropic has created the Model Hardware Standard, a set of standardized drivers that allow AI agents to control and interface with physical devices. Previously, AI systems have been limited to working with text, images, code, and other digital data, but this standard aims to extend AI capabilities into the physical world by providing a common interface between AI models and arbitrary devices. The system reduces the time needed to integrate multiple devices in experimental settings from weeks or months to hours or minutes by eliminating the need for custom translator programs between components. Anthropic is currently working with scientific research labs and manufacturers to develop safety practices and best practices, with plans to eventually make the standard open source and compatible with any AI agent.
