Project ProtoStar makes science datasets AI-ready

Hugging Face: Announcing Project ProtoStar: Making Publicly Funded Science AI-Ready

The initiative seeks to unlock research breakthroughs by preparing government-funded scientific datasets for machine learning applications.

Get smart on it

Project ProtoStar is an initiative to make publicly funded scientific research more accessible and usable for AI by encouraging the release of datasets, models, and code in standardized, machine-readable formats across open platforms. The U.S. federal government invests approximately $190 billion annually in research with increasing expectations that results be shared publicly, but much of this research remains scattered across incompatible systems and lacks the documentation needed for reuse. The initiative brings together universities, research organizations, and industry partners to formalize commitments to releasing scientific artifacts in AI-ready formats and will demonstrate their value through a series of open challenges, starting with a climate prediction competition. The effort aims to help researchers build on existing work more easily and enable AI systems to discover and combine scientific resources across disciplines.
