
Recent findings provide one of the most detailed pictures to date of the genetic architecture of schizophrenia, opening up new avenues for research into the disorder.
Researchers used AI computational models to analyze genetic data from over 102,000 people and identify 766 genes associated with schizophrenia, including 641 previously unknown ones. Unlike diseases caused by a single mutation, schizophrenia arises from hundreds of genetic variants that work together as an interconnected network, each with small effects on different brain processes such as neural development and neuron communication. The findings provide one of the most detailed pictures of schizophrenia's genetic architecture to date, allowing scientists to understand how these genes interact and collectively contribute to disease risk rather than acting in isolation. With this expanded genetic map revealed, researchers can now more precisely investigate the disorder's behavior and potential treatments.
