The US Federal Communications Commission has banned the import of foreign-made robots, citing cybersecurity vulnerabilities discovered in robots made by Chinese companies. The ban applies to mobile robots including humanoid robots, quadrupeds, and advanced robot vacuums that weigh more than 4.4 pounds and have sensors and network connectivity, though it exempts medical robots, fixed industrial robots, and previously authorized models. Supporters argue the ban will encourage US robotics manufacturing and help America lead in this technology sector, while critics warn it could slow US innovation by cutting off access to affordable Chinese platforms that researchers currently use to develop humanoid robots.
