The acquisition matters because warehouse robots have historically relied on suction-based grippers that work well for some items but struggle with others like cloth and porous bags, while pinch grasping technology offers broader capability but has reliability challenges. Two major obstacles still limit robotic picking: developing better artificial intelligence for the hands and giving robots a sense of touch through tactile sensing. The combined company is prioritizing reliability and pick quality over speed, focusing on reducing product damage and errors rather than maximizing picks per hour.
