Open datasets of robot movements help researchers build better manipulation models without proprietary barriers to access and reproducibility.
Robot learning currently lacks sufficient real-world manipulation data, even though capable policy architectures and computing resources exist. Grabette is an open, low-cost handheld recording system that captures manipulation demonstrations using cameras and tracking technology, then converts them into robot-ready datasets without requiring an actual robot. The system works in two steps: recording a task with the handheld gripper, then processing the data through a browser-based pipeline that uses SLAM to reconstruct the 6-degree-of-freedom trajectory and converts it to a standard dataset format. By making data collection as simple as recording a video, the goal is to enable anyone to contribute to a large, collaborative manipulation dataset for training robot policies.
