Google has released an upgraded version of its robotics AI system that enables robots to perform more complex tasks, understand their surroundings in real time, and work together. The new system includes three AI models, one publicly available, that give robots improved physical control and the ability to analyze video feeds and recognize when tasks are complete or have failed. The development matters because the goal is to create generalist robots that can perform any task a human could do, rather than machines programmed for narrow, specific actions. Google has also introduced new safety measures, including a benchmark to evaluate whether robots will refuse unsafe actions and halt when humans are nearby, reflecting concerns that physical AI mistakes could cause greater harm than errors in text or image generation.
