DoorDash has received Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing it to operate its own drone delivery program called DoorDash Air. This certification means DoorDash passed a rigorous five-stage federal evaluation process and is now one of only eight drone operators in the country with this approval. The company is building drones in-house as part of a broader strategy to create a multimodal delivery network that can handle midrange deliveries, which are less attractive to human delivery workers and take longer to complete. DoorDash plans to announce more details about where and when it will launch drone deliveries at an event in September.
