A state governor has ordered a comprehensive audit of all data center projects seeking to connect to the Texas electrical grid, requiring regulators to verify that each project meets state law and regulatory requirements before approval. The directive signals stricter oversight of AI data centers as proposed electrical demand in the state continues to grow significantly. Texas has become a major market for AI infrastructure projects that together represent hundreds of gigawatts of proposed new electric demand, which far exceeds the state's current peak load, prompting concern that speculative projects could distort grid planning. The order represents a broader regulatory shift in which authorities are increasingly requiring proof that proposed projects are financially committed, physically executable, and likely to become long-term customers before planning transmission and generation infrastructure around them.
