Solid-state transformers are power electronics systems that convert grid alternating current into direct current for AI data centers. They differ from traditional transformers by using high-frequency magnetics and semiconductor switching instead of iron cores, resulting in smaller, lighter equipment that operates more efficiently. These devices convert medium-voltage AC directly to 800 V DC, which can then be distributed throughout data centers and converted to lower voltages for servers. The technology matters because it reduces equipment size, improves power efficiency and control, enables two-way power flow for solar and battery integration, and addresses power delivery as a growing performance bottleneck in high-density AI facilities.
