Microsoft has completed the first data center facility at its Mount Pleasant campus in Wisconsin, a major AI infrastructure project that began limited operations in April and is now fully operational. The milestone is significant because it demonstrates that hyperscalers are converting announced multibillion-dollar AI infrastructure plans into actual operating capacity, at a time when compute capacity remains constrained in the market. The facility incorporates sustainability features including a closed-loop cooling system designed to minimize water use and low-carbon construction materials. The campus location was acquired after a planned large-scale electronics manufacturing project was scaled back, and the site now supports roughly 550 full-time employees.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and Codex and the models those tools utilize, and Broadcom, an established silicon supplier, have announced a new chip called Jalapeño, designed specifically for large language model inference in data centers.
