Epoch AI: Introducing the AI Chip Imports explorer
Our explorer uses customs records to estimate national shares. Since 2022, 72% of AI compute has ended up in the US and about 10% in China, including chips China makes itself.
Epoch AI has launched a new data explorer that tracks where advanced AI chips are imported globally by analyzing customs records since 2022. The tool matters because countries that host large AI data centers can train and deploy frontier models within their borders, gaining significant control over who accesses those models, which is why governments compete to attract AI infrastructure and the US enforces export controls to limit advanced chips reaching certain nations. The explorer shows that the United States received 72 percent of global AI compute from 2022 through mid-2026, while China received about 10 percent including domestically produced chips. The data comes from customs records in 16 major destinations, adjusted to account for chips passing through trade hubs and supplemented with information about chips made and used domestically.

If there's one issue that seems to activate all kinds of voters in 2026, it's data centers. The rapid buildout of these massive server storage facilities - and the infrastructure construction and expenses that come with them - has sparked local opposition in communities across the country and become a major issue in many congressional and gubernatorial campaigns. At the same time, tech money has been pouring into many of these races. Leading the Future, a super PAC backed by ve

Google Cloud has announced Agent Compute Engine, a compute service built specifically for AI agents. Google Agent Compute Engine gives each agent its own hardware-isolated microVM. The sandbox holds zero credentials. The service already powers Gemini as an agent for work tasks. Google unveiled it this week at AGNTCon + MCPCon. Customer preview is targeted for the coming months. The pitch: VM-grade isolation with container-like speed and density. TL;DR Unit: One hardware-isolated microVM
