Data Center Backlash Reaches the Ballot Box

Data center development has become a political liability for elected officials who previously promoted it as economic development. Between August 2025 and August 2026, at least 18 incumbent officeholders lost elections after taking documented action on data center projects or becoming associated with political fights over their development. The losses occurred across multiple states, with cases ranging from those where officials directly attributed their defeats to data center votes to cases where challengers made the issue prominent alongside concerns about electricity costs, taxes, and land use. The backlash demonstrates that data center politics can extend beyond local zoning disputes to threaten senior state officials.
