Tech companies face questions on AI spending sustainability

TechCrunch: Cracks are emerging in the AI spending boom

Big Tech is pouring billions into AI infrastructure, but mounting debt, negative cash flow, and growing investor skepticism are raising questions about the sustainability of the AI spending boom.

Get smart on it

Investors are becoming nervous about the massive capital spending on AI infrastructure by major technology companies, even as those companies continue to increase their investments in data centers and chips. Several of the largest tech companies have reported negative free cash flow, meaning they are spending more money than they are bringing in, while simultaneously taking on significant debt to fund these infrastructure costs. The concern centers on whether these enormous investments will generate sufficient returns, particularly as some companies see their core businesses threatened by the very AI technologies they are funding. Stock markets reacted sharply to these concerns, with major technology stocks and chip manufacturers experiencing significant declines.
