Data centers require high-bandwidth fiber connectivity to handle data-intensive workloads, and total bandwidth purchased by data centers grew roughly 330 percent in the early 2020s, but fiber supply has not kept pace with this demand in many regions. The shortage stems from a lack of skilled installers and splicers, as well as insufficient economic incentives for telecommunications providers to expand fiber infrastructure beyond densely populated areas. Data center operators can address this constraint by prioritizing fiber availability during site selection, mapping competitive demand in candidate regions, negotiating with carriers to improve the business case for fiber deployment, and exploring alternative connectivity options offered by public cloud providers.
