A major cloud provider is building a high-capacity submarine cable across the Pacific Ocean to connect Japan and Washington state, with service expected to begin in 2029. The cable will support bandwidth-intensive AI applications including distributed large language model training, financial transactions, and video streaming. As AI computing spreads across multiple regions, network capacity between data centers is becoming a critical constraint alongside power availability, requiring hyperscalers to invest in both international submarine cables and terrestrial fiber networks to move data efficiently. This Washington landing point represents the first new cable landing station in that state in more than 25 years and provides geographic diversity by offering an alternative route into the Pacific Northwest beyond existing coastal corridors.
