OpenAI announced a new AI model called GPT-5.6, which will become the preferred model powering Microsoft 365 Copilot across applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat, and Cowork. The model is described as delivering more useful work from every token with stronger performance per dollar, enabling Microsoft 365 users to create higher-quality outputs with less effort across these productivity tools. The deployment occurs through both native integration and direct access via the OpenAI API, representing a continuation of the partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft to bring advanced AI capabilities to organizations and individuals using everyday work applications.
