The Eiliko robot toy. | Photo by Sean Hollister / The Verge Eiliko, a cute robot charm you can hang on your bag with built-in AI conversations, turned out to be a security nightmare. It told owners that "your secrets are safe with me," but hackers could easily read complete transcripts of everything we told the toy, and that was just the beginning. The Verge and security researcher Sammy Azdoufal spent over a month trying to get in contact with the company, including emails to E
Eiliko is a robot toy with built-in AI conversations that was found to have serious security flaws, allowing hackers to read complete transcripts of private conversations despite the toy claiming users' "secrets are safe." The maker, Energize Lab, remained silent when contacted by The Verge and a security researcher for over a month before finally responding. The company says it has now closed external access to its systems, disabled remote modification of robot responses, and will hire an independent security firm to review all systems, while also pledging to stop storing conversation records and user profiles. However, the company has not promised to eliminate data collection permanently, stating it plans to restore the long-term memory and custom avatar features once systems are deemed secure.
