AI systems have recently improved dramatically at solving advanced abstract mathematics problems, jumping from being unable to perform basic arithmetic to producing work comparable to professional mathematicians in some areas. This shift has created an existential crisis in the mathematics field, with leading mathematicians questioning the future role of human mathematicians, the value of academic training programs, and what mathematical knowledge actually means. The crisis was triggered by AI discoveries solving longstanding problems, most notably an internal model disproving an 80-year-old conjecture. The concern centers on whether these advances will reshape employment and funding structures in mathematics, while questions persist about whether these breakthroughs represent genuine progress or are partly a marketing exercise for AI labs.
