Utility companies promise to spare us from AI’s energy bill

Nearly 200 utility companies and data center developers have signed a voluntary pledge to prevent AI infrastructure costs from increasing consumer electricity bills. The pledge, introduced in March and now being announced with new signatories, includes vague commitments for AI providers to pay for new infrastructure needed to run generative AI models. However, the pledge lacks enforcement mechanisms, carries no penalties for non-compliance, and cannot be enforced by the federal government since energy prices are set by state regulators and electricity traders. Despite these promises, data center demand is already expected to add billions in additional costs for consumers across multiple states.
