Trump drops restrictions on Anthropic’s Mythos and Fable models

The U.S. government has lifted export restrictions on two advanced AI models, allowing a major AI lab to restore public access to them after weeks of negotiations. The models had been added to a list of export-controlled technologies in June, which effectively blocked their availability to foreign nationals without special approval. The Commerce Secretary stated the AI lab agreed to detect security risks, work with the government on standards, and report malicious activity. Cybersecurity experts had questioned whether the restrictions were genuinely about security or were used as leverage, especially as competing AI models from Asian companies began approaching similar capabilities.
