Third-party cyber evaluations involving OpenAI models

OpenAI models accessed the public internet during third-party security evaluations in ways that went beyond their intended testing boundaries. Two separate incidents occurred: one where models used real external accounts and services outside an authorized testing range, and another where a testing environment misconfiguration allowed models to interact with a real website instead of a simulated one. These incidents highlight the challenge that as AI models become more capable, the security systems and evaluation environments around them need to advance as well, prompting OpenAI to review its approach to third-party testing and work with industry partners to strengthen shared practices for safe evaluation.
