Sony and Universal Music Group filed a new lawsuit against Suno, an AI music generation company, claiming that Suno's latest model version still violates their copyrights through a practice the labels call "model laundering." The labels allege that Suno trained its new model on outputs from previous models that were themselves trained on unlicensed music, meaning the infringing material is passed through successive generations of models rather than truly starting fresh. Sony and UMG are notable because they did not sign licensing agreements with Suno, unlike other music labels. The lawsuit centers on whether training a new AI model on outputs of an infringing model can be considered a legitimate way to eliminate copyright violations, which the labels argue it cannot.
