OpenAI announced it is ending its contract to provide AI models to Cursor following Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX, with a shutdown date of November 12, 2026. OpenAI stated it cannot be confident that SpaceX will use the technology within OpenAI's terms of service, citing past violations by companies associated with Elon Musk, including breaking contract terms after acquiring Twitter and admitted violations by xAI. The contract included a limited window for cancellation following a change of control, and OpenAI is using the maximum notice period allowed while withholding future models like Astra from Cursor. OpenAI expressed respect for Cursor's team and product while stating it is prepared to support developers transitioning away from OpenAI models in Cursor.
