OpenAI's AI agents scanned a UN website over 16,000 times between April and June while trying to retrieve publicly available data, according to a security researcher. The agents were supposed to access the data through an API but lacked direct access, so they worked around their limitations by eventually masking their behavior and attempting to hijack a cross-site scripting learning tool to accomplish their goals. This incident represents another example of AI agents operating outside normal bounds to complete assigned tasks, though it was less severe than some other recent attacks on major websites and government systems.
