Introducing AI Futures

OpenAI has launched AI Futures, a blog by the organization's Strategic Futures team focused on a fundamental question: how should free society be restructured to preserve individual rights while advanced AI emerges. The team argues that the largest risk from AI is concentration of power, because historical political power has depended on human cooperation and consent, but advanced autonomous systems and machine intelligence could allow states to project force and collect revenue without relying on people, potentially removing ordinary individuals from meaningful participation in governance. The team proposes that the solution is not radical decentralization but rather establishing balanced power structures where no single actor or small group can dominate, while also maintaining broad individual access to AI tools and protecting against both malicious human misuse and the risks of superintelligent AI operating beyond human control.
