AI data centers consume significant amounts of water for cooling their processors, which can reach extremely high internal temperatures. While data center water consumption currently represents less than 1 percent of the nation's total water usage, rapid expansion of AI infrastructure could substantially increase this figure, particularly straining water resources in drought-prone regions. Solutions exist to reduce AI's water footprint, including shifting to renewable energy sources, strategic placement of data centers in water-rich areas, and adoption of more efficient cooling technologies such as liquid cooling systems. Experts predict that combining these approaches could reduce AI's future water consumption by up to 86 percent.
