Chinese AI models that are free or cheap to use are rapidly gaining customers in the US market, with experts warning that America's technological advantage in artificial intelligence may be at risk. These models compete with expensive offerings from American companies by being open-source, meaning they are freely available to download and customize without usage fees. US AI firms have accused Chinese companies of using a technique called "distillation" to extract data from American models, and some industry figures worry that Chinese open-source models could become the global standard. The Trump administration has expressed concern about China's rapid AI development, while some US lawmakers have criticized American companies for considering partnerships with Chinese AI firms.
The administration says narrow jailbreak tests showed the models can reveal software flaws, so it is vetting users customer by customer while agencies and firms negotiate a permanent release process.
