Cloudflare, a company that operates a large network to make the internet faster and safer, is positioning itself to help shape how the internet's business model evolves as artificial intelligence transforms web traffic. Bot traffic now exceeds human traffic online, driven by AI companies scraping the web and AI agents performing tasks, which means infrastructure costs must be paid for differently than the traditional advertising model that powered the internet for decades. Cloudflare sits between websites and these AI agents, allowing website owners to block AI tools, allow them, or require payment for access. The company is grappling with how to build a healthier business model for an internet where automated traffic will vastly outnumber human traffic.
