Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s longtime COO, is leaving to ‘start something new’
One of OpenAI's longest serving executives is headed out the door, although the longtime COO told staff that he was "excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point."

Brad Lightcap, a long-serving executive at OpenAI who previously served as chief financial officer and chief operating officer, announced he is leaving the company to pursue a new venture. Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and had built much of the company's operations and business functions across finance, legal, and other departments. His departure comes as OpenAI undergoes a significant executive shakeup while preparing for an IPO, with several other top executives also recently leaving the firm. In his announcement, Lightcap indicated he believes important new developments will be needed in the coming period but provided few details about what he plans to pursue next.
